Learning content only
Charts, patterns, levels, examples and videos in the app explain how markets work. Examples are chosen in hindsight to show what a pattern looks like. They do not mean the pattern will repeat, or that a trade based on it would have made money. Past performance does not indicate future results.
Most individual traders in derivatives lose money
From SEBI’s risk disclosure on derivatives:
- 9 out of 10 individual traders in equity Futures and Options Segment, incurred net losses.
- On an average, loss makers registered net trading loss close to ₹50,000.
- Over and above the net trading losses incurred, loss makers expended an additional 28% of net trading losses as transaction costs.
- Those making net trading profits, incurred between 15% to 50% of such profits as transaction cost.

A later SEBI study, published in September 2024, found that 93% of more than one crore individual traders in equity F&O made losses between FY 2021-22 and FY 2023-24.
Risks of futures and options
Futures use leverage. The margin you put up is small compared with the size of the contract, so a small price move can cause a large loss. You can lose more than your margin and may have to add money at short notice.
Options can lose their entire value in a short time. If you sell (write) options, your possible loss can be much larger than the premium you receive.
Stop-loss orders do not guarantee that your loss will be limited to the amount you intended, because fast-moving markets can skip past your price.
Other risks
Online trading depends on technology. Delays, outages or errors in your broker’s systems, your internet connection or market data can affect your orders. Information in the app may be delayed or contain mistakes.
